നിങ്ങളിൽ എത്രപേർ നിഴൽമലയിൽ പോയിട്ടുണ്ട്? കുറഞ്ഞ പക്ഷം നിഴൽമലയെ കുറിച്ച് കേട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്? ആരും തന്നെയുണ്ടാവില്ല. കാരണം ഇന്ന് അങ്ങനൊരു പ്രദേശം ഭൂപടങ്ങളിലോ, എന്തിനു ഈ ഭൂമിയിലോ തന്നെ, അവശേഷിപ്പില്ല. വളരെ തുച്ഛമായ ചിലരുടെ ഓർമ്മകളിൽ മാത്രമാണ് ഇന്ന് ആ സ്ഥലം ബാക്കിയുള്ളത്.

ഏകദേശം ഇരുപത് വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുൻപ് നടന്ന കഥയാണ്. അക്കാലത്താണ് അശോകൻ തിരികെ നാട്ടിലേക്കെത്തുന്നത്. നാട്ടിലെത്തിയാൽ ഉടനെ നല്ലൊരു പണി തരപ്പെടും എന്നാണ് അയാൾ വിശ്വസിച്ചിരുന്നത്. പക്ഷേ,

“നിങ്ങളിത് എങ്ങോട്ടാ?” വഴിയരികിൽ കാത്തുനിന്ന കുമാരൻ, അതുവഴിയെ വന്നവരോടായി ചോദിച്ചു. അപ്പോൾ സമയം സന്ധ്യ കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. ഇരുട്ട് പറന്ന് തുടങ്ങിയതേ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളു.
